The Drexel Dining Hall — also known as the Handschumaker Dining Center, aka “The Hans”: Almost a glorified cafeteria. Sometimes has a decent selection. Always a disappointment. The mere thought of taking a walk of shame down the stairs into the depths of cheap tomato sauce and mystery meat makes me cringe. The fruit is far from fresh, everything is fried or buttered, and some things aren’t even real. The eggs. Ugh. Square shaped, watered down egg beaters have to be the worst aspect of dining hall dining — stick them with mini pancakes drowned in syrup, and concentrated, watery orange juice and you have yourself a less-than-satisfying breakfast. My less-than-satisfying breakfast. Following the model of college cafs everywhere, it’s not just that the taste of it, it’s that the food leaves you feeling bloated and sleepy. Not to mention the digestive circus you endure because you didn’t wash your hands before you ate. And as for those health nuts out there, or those girls who seem to eat nothing but salad, there is the typical salad bar. Complete with nutrition-less iceberg lettuce, discolored vegetables and salad dressing that always seems to be almost empty. Who is hoarding the ranch dressing? Honestly now! But the best part by far is the random assortment bar where you can find cottage cheese that someone dropped pudding into, magenta colored jello-like substances, pudding with crusty edges and applesauce that is always warm and usually chunky.
But here, friends, mom, dad, is the silver lining: An Asian man with the middle name of “Cowboy.” Ironically enough, the Hans was planned out. Hing “Cowboy” Siu who owns and operates Yum Yum on Spring Garden helped plan the menu for the Asian bar at the Hans which usually consists of stir-fry dishes. The Hans menu is supposed to somewhat resemble the dishes served at Yum Yum, and Siu himself can be found working the dinner rush. So yeah, use that meal plan. Just stay away from eggs.
