Would You Like Bread With That?

endive.jpgIt seemed like Blue In Green would never reopen at its White Building space on the corner of 12th & Chestnut. When it finally did, we stopped in hoping to spot some pancake flipping. We regret to inform that there’s no flapjack action just yet.

“I’m waiting on the city license so that I can add a grill. I won’t promise pancakes, but I’d like to bring them back. We’re going to add more tables and a magazine rack”, owner Michael Baer says.

The small space does propose to be your new lunch take-out destination, even if you’re only picking up some greens. A case full of crisp, colorful salads-that-eat-like-meals awaits. The Belgian endive is capped with bleu cheese and equipped with a side of tangy sesame-raisin dressing and earthy, toasted nuts.

“You want bread with that?”, Baer asks. Does he know that we will fall hard for his bread, baked in-house with other grainy goodies like breakfast pastries and cookies?

We admire the coffee, a True North Roasting House blend that’s similar to Jamaican Blue Mountain. The salad is phenomenal, with multiple notes of flavor from the crunchy nuts and creamy cheese, rounded out with a sturdy baguette. The cookies are tiny and come in several varieties, the self-defeating answer to a light meal.
