Beneluxx: A Love Story

beneluxx We’d been meaning to check out Beneluxx since it opened, but never got around to it. Besides, given that it’s from the owners of Eulogy, we figured it was just another place with a big menu of Belgian beers. And well, the phrase “Tasting Room” doesn’t sound so promising for our wallets. So color us pleasantly surprised on all counts. Nearly every wine, beer, and cheese in the house is available in well-priced sample portions (thus the “tasting”), and the non-food samples are served in old-school chemistry beakers. Bonus: Each table has a built-in jet of water to clean your glass with. It’s pretty much the stuff of dreams, and that’s not even talking about the food: Fondue (cheese or chocolate), panini, and venison, boar, and duck robiquettes (like crepes). Our favorite discovery: The hopped-up, yet shockingly floral, Two Hearted Ale, an IPA from Michigan. The sample system and rotating specials means you can try something new every time. Between Beneluxx and National Mechanics across the street, there’s suddenly an oasis in the Old City wasteland. So yeah: Consider us regulars-to-be.

yes I agree wholeheartedly. I am a fan of Eulogy myself and also never made it to the “new place” until the Chimay and cheese tasting for beer week. The only downside for me was the completely American display of masking tape labels and pint glasses filled with chocolate. Elegannt it is not. To reduce someones art into this fashion was a tad depessing

Ah, yes- Bell’s Two-Hearted. They have a fine line of beers. Seems the SP Tap Room loves them, too, always have a few on tap. Definitely try their Oberon when it comes out in spring-fall. Someone around town will be sure to have it. Hell, even Jose Pistola’s had it last year.
