Wild Boar: Ugly And Delicious

boar Awww, check out that adorable tusked maw. Makes you just want to gobble him down, right? Well, yeah, wild boar is all over Philly menus, but all too often at posh one-word restaurants like Nectar, Cochon, Sonam, and Copper. At the risk of putting too fine a point on it, fuck that noise. As a mammoth creature of disturbing ugliness that would gladly impale you if it had half the chance, a wild boar deserves to be eaten at a bar, washed down with strong beer and even stronger pride. This can be done in our fine town as well — Standard Tap has had boar on its chalkboard from time to time, including wild boar baked eggs, and so has its sister spot Johnny Brenda’s. As gushed about previously, Beneluxx has a crepe-ish dish featuring boar and other woodsy fauna, and most intriguingly, the South Philadelphia Tap Room has a wild boar burrito. A new chef is taking over at the Tap Room come April, so get there before then in case that burrito (the only one on their menu) becomes extinct. After all, a boar would probably eat a burrito made of you and get drunk while doing it. Sayin’.
