We like to pretend we hate Stephen Starr with every fiber of our being. One can’t deny the man gave mid-90’s Philly a kick-in-the-restaurant-ass, though. The upstart places we love might not have existed without his suburbanite appeal/cashflow.
But that doesn’t give him the right to replace Striped Bass with ANOTHER STEAKHOUSE. We suppose that Capital Grille, Shula’s Steakhouse, Smith and Wollensky, Ruth’s Chris, Ted’s Montana Grill, The Prime Rib, and Barclay Prime (also a Starr joint) aren’t enough.
What we do like about this story is that the newly named ‘Butcher and Singer Steak and Seafood’ is going for a supper club vibe complete with high-backed booths and table lamps. Bogey-style. We couldn’t script a better setting for the Starr/Stein gun duel that is now inevitable. Our money’s on the man in the striped jumpsuit.
Food and Drinq: They Made A Steakhouse And Then They Lopped It, They Looped It.
