Phoodie Confidential: We Read A PW Online Feature And, Get This, Liked It

That would be A Taste of Blackmail from Jacob Lambert. The recurring fiction piece will be helmed by the editor of PhillyTurkey.com, which frankly, is not so tantalizing. The “serial mystery starring Craig LaBan” hits home with us because we all evoke the spirit of the persnickety bastion of excess from time to time. He is perhaps the easiest joke to pass around a campfire of goat cheese & fig reduction s’mores. Thusly, to spear LaBan anew is a risk in itself. Yet Lambert’s take, while at times over-the-top and pocked with exclamation points, is done deliciously so.

Once a week, when we gather around the Phoodie bonfire for our edit meeting, we send the first person to mention LaBan on a beer run as penance. As the perpetrator scuttles off reciting “I will remember that there is more to write about in this town than the LaBan review. I will remember that there is more to write about in this town than the LaBan review. I will remember that there is more to write about in this town than the LaBan review,” they pray for the day that some editor at a not-good blog will serve the subject justice. A Taste of Blackmail is fizzy and refreshing, sensations that we condone in these heated times. But don’t read it before lunch, unless you can stomach the Heller-LaBan interplay.
