God Bless Burgermerica, Land That I Heartclog

The James Beard Foundation surveyed 248 people to figure out if the USA had any food they considered distinctly American cuisine. 90.8 percent of the participants said that hamburger and cheeseburgers are the most distinct American food. In celebration of this discovery (and to get you thinking about some July 4th eats) we have compiled a list of places around Philadelphia you might want to check out for a great burger.

Copacabana, 344 South Street
The Copa Burger is worth traveling through the South Street circus to enjoy.

Eulogy Belgian Tavern, 136 Chestnut Street
The Beneluxx Napoleon Burger at Eulogy is 8 oz. of ground beef served on a challah bun, seasoned with secret spices, choice of cheese, a topping of your choosing and frietjes.
And if ground beef is not for you, indulge in their Flander’s Veggie Burger.

Five Guys, 1527 Chestnut Street
With reviews like “mind blowing fries” and “best burger in town” this place has created a sort of cult like following.

Goodburger, 1725 Chestnut Street
Goodburger is the new kid in town, and is quickly making lots of friends. Their signature burger is coked-to-order and the beef patties are ground fresh and cooked on a charcoal grill. Veggie and Portobello burgers are also available. Not to mention Ben & Jerry’s supplies the ice cream for the milkshake menu.

Standard Tap, 901 N. 2nd Street
This Northern Liberties eatery has made a name for itself as having on of the juiciest burgers in town.

I’m a little biased, but National Mechanics’ burger is great, and only $5 at lunchtime. I’ve never had the veggie burger, but I’ve heard people say it’s among the best around. I had the burger at Johnny Brenda’s once and it was good — but their menu leaves no room to explain that there’s stuff on the burger that you wouldn’t normally find on a burger and may not like — ie: mayo, hot peppers.

How could you not mention Good Dog?

Honorable Mention (at the very least):

Misconduct Tavern (also has $5 lunch burger)
    Royal Tavern
South Philly Tap Room (Blue Pig in particular, but they’re all good)
    Good Dog

Not mentioning Good Dog when discussing burgers is like discussing wife beaters w/out mentioning Myers.

I really like the Brasserie Perrier Burger. Awesome fries too.
Too many places that do handcut fries undercook them. I’d rather eat frozen simplot fries than an ndercooked fry.
