We may be the only people at this party who can humbly raise their hands and say, yes, we’ve been to 2nd Street Annie’s in Wildwood, NJ, and lived to tell a tale. It was — what’s the word? — carnie-ish? Allow me to set the scene: A big room with a stage and two bars. Completely populated with Jeannie from Accounting, only multiplied roughly 200 times and given twice as many Sex On A Beach-es. Even the bartenders are morbidly obese. On the stage, a double piano (or maybe it was a single? this could have been an entire double-vision nightmare) with a man (or men) leading the crowd in a singalong of “Sweet Caroline.” It was, no lie, the closest representation I’ve ever seen in real life to the lyrics of “Desolation Row.” And guess what, Philadelphia? They’re coming to Philadelphia. NoLibs, to be specific. In the spot that was the (admittedly just as hellacious) Metro, at Front and Fairmount. This is what happens, my hipstergentrifying brethren, when you make God angry.
