Food Blob: The Big Apple’s Juice Is Best

Ripert

  • Craig Laban reviews the Ritz-Carlton/Eric Ripert joint venture 10 Arts. The chef describes his approach as “Ripert in jeans…a casual neighborhood restaurant.” So he offers a menu starting at $24 for a half-chicken and a “stifingly marked up” wine list. Laban dances around the point, falling just short of calling the menu boring before awarding it 2 bells. He does credit Monica Glass’s dessert menu, which includes a tartlet served with ice cream made in-house from TastyKake Kandy Kakes. Buying a pack for 50 cents and mashing them into some Turkey Hill still sounds like a better idea. [Inky]
  • New York City’s water was voted best for the first time in the 22-year history of a taste test at the recent State Fair in Syracuse. They better not bring that sludge down I-95 though or we’ll show them how Philly does water. [NYTimes]
  • As we mentioned back in July, Ed Hackett and Jonathan McDonald’s reworking of the old Chaucer’s site is going to be called Pub & Kitchen and is set to open soon. Foobooz has posted the preview menu. Don’t worry if the lobster BLT and escargot Bibb salad don’t get you going. Less adventurous diners can enjoy the Simple Burger and Black Pepper Flatiron Steak. [Foobooz]
  • Leigh Maida and Brendan Hartranft of the Memphis Taproom signed a lease to open a new “neighborhood beer bar and kitchen.” Local 44 will open at 44th and Spruce, former site of Kelliann’s. They are quick to point out that the bar won’t be much like the Taproom though, with only “small scale” kitchen plans in the works. So… they’re opening a bar. Hopefully the little food they offer will have more in common with the Taproom than their concept. [Food and Drinq]
  • Joe Sixpack plows his way through America’s pumpkin ales and plugs a drink at McGillin’s called the Pumpkin Bomb. My word, what could that be? Oh, just Bols Pumpkin Smash liqueur and Captain Morgan’s dropped into a glass of Jack’s Pumpkin Spice. Uh… huh. I’ll just take the beer and a shot of something less disgusting please.
