Recommended Viewing: All This In Tea

Over the weekend and entirely by chance, we caught All This In Tea, David Lee Hoffman’s documentary on the Chinese tea trade, on the Sundance Channel. Now, if you’re like us, you love tea — a hot cuppa lapsang souchong for me, if you please — but you know next to nothing about where it comes from, or what is involved in tea’s production. All This In Tea is nothing if not a crash course in both the history and present day concerns of the tea trade. And Hoffman is the best kind of guide: A man driven to obsession, who will literally go anywhere in the world to find teas that are The Real Deal, untouched by chemicals, and preferably as obscure as possible. Language barriers don’t phase him; and there’s no one in this film whom he won’t talk to, or haggle with, over tea. And along the way, we learned so much. All This In Tea airs again on Sundance on Thursday, Sept. 25 at 10am. Tivo that STAT. It’s also available on Netflix.
