Vegetarians, Vegans, Locavores, etc., etc. Thirty years ago, these terms barely existed and now they can describe just about half the people you know. Get ready to add an new buzz word to your food vernacular…Flexitarians. Flexitarians eat mainly a vegetarian diet, with the occasional meat product. Similar to the Semi-Vegetarian, however the Flexitarian eater does not discriminate against any type of meat. Faux chicken? No sir, bring on the real stuff. It is all delicious to them. Despite flexitarianism’s popularity, this diet is not that revolutionary. Just about every college kid who cannot afford chicken more than twice a month eats this way.

Flexitarian eating may not be all that “revolutionary” but I think it is a great way to move yourself toward a healthier diet and still eat the occasional chicken breast or steak. Actually an great dietitian, Dawn Jackson Blatner, just wrote The Flexitarian Diet which is a really great book. It is filled with really delicious recipes, sound nutrition advice and introduces some foods that most people are unaware of or don’t know how to cook. I highly recommend the book to anyone looking to add more vegetables to their diet.
How ’bout the classic term— omnivore!
