· With apologies to Elf Power, the winter is coming, and that means it’s time to knock back some heavy beer that’s high on booze. Not that there isn’t an excuse to do it the rest of the year, but seriously, ever try sitting on the porch and slamming an Ommegang in the middle of July? We’ve done it, and it leads to… unpleasantness. Iron Hill has announced a new limited Triple Bock that will boast a hefty 13.2% ABV. It will be available in all of their restaurants, and you can get it to go in 375mL bottles that have a 3D label and goggles. [BeerAdvocate]
· Jose Garces has named his upcoming “casual” whiskey bar Village Whiskey and is shooting for sometime after the new year. You don’t have to wonder how we feel about this. We eagerly await the list of house drinks.[Foobooz/philly.com]
· Cantina dos Segundos is now offering a brunch menu all week. A full menu isn’t up yet but the dishes seem to mix your standard brunch fare (french toast, something similar to eggs benedict) with a Mexican influence and traditional Mexican breakfast fare. · City Council is set to soon vote on a bill that would require chain restaurants (15 or more locations) in the city to post calorie counts clearly on their menu boards next to prices. The idea seems to be that people will be less inclined to order unhealthy items like a Whopper when they have to be reminded that it packs a rotund 760 calories and 47 fat grams moments before gorging. Sounds like a good measure, but shouldn’t the fact that chain food is awful be enough determent? You really don’t have to go far to find a sandwich in Philadelphia, people. [Rick Nichols/Inky]
