Dept. Of Recession Bangers: Seafood Unlimited’s Prices Are In-sane

lobsterbib.jpgFor those of you craving a spot of decadence after a long day of looking at Craigslist for jobs:

Seafood Unlimited has vowed to satisfy Philadelphia’s lobster cravings through the end of 2008 with its delicious Nightly Lobster Special.

Every night through the end of the year, guests enjoy a succulent 1 1/8 lb. [$19.75], 1 1/2 lb [$27.75] or 2 lb. jumbo lobster [$37] served with two sides. Each morsel is a reminder that indulgence can, on occasion, be extravagant and affordable – at the same. Then on Tuesdays, Lobster prices tank even further with a 1 1/2 lb. lobsters served with two sides, for just $24.95 all night.

How do they do it? Volume, the world financial crisis, two wars, and so on. Best not to think on it too much.

Seafood Unlimited, 270 S. 20th St., 215-732-3663.

The market for lobster has collapsed this year because people aren’t ordering dishes they perceive as extravagant. Lobstermen in Maine can’t sell half of what they can catch. This isn’t really a discount so much as a reflection of the market value for lobster. And the prices should actually be cheaper given what the wholesale cost has fallen to.
