Is God dead? We only mention it because Shirt Corner is closing, ending literally decades of unironic Old City shopping, but also this: Could the venerable Old City location (Third & Market Sts.) be further insulted by the placement of an Applebee’s? Mon dieu, indeed. I mean, think about the kind of asshole who regularly frequents standard-issue Old City junk like Marmont or 32 Degrees. Got a mental picture? NOW, imagine the kind of asshole who’d frequent the Old City Applebee’s. Barring a mental image of Chevy-Chase-as-tourist-with-a-fanny-pack, you just can’t do it, can you? The rumor was first floated all the way back in November on this PhillyBlog thread, but now that Shirt Corner is definitely shutting its doors, it’s gaining new life. Are you there, God? It’s me, Phoodie. I really hope you are reading this.

On Friday I was wondering how Shirt Corner managed to stay on so long in a very different neighborhood. But now this?
Have you ever considered that it’s not an Applebee’s but maybe a CVS?
