Adventures In Junk Food: Big John’s Pickle Bar

Saturday morning, the phone rang. The voice on the other end said, “Get dressed. We’re going to Big John’s in Cherry Hill for cheesesteaks.” “But why?,” we asked. “Don’t ask so many questions,” the voice said. “They have a pickle bar.”
And so they do. Pickle bar pictures, and some explaining, after the jump.

We know what you’re thinking, because we though the same: Is a pickle bar like a salad bar, except with pickles? Yes. And peppers. Sweet pickles, hot pickles, kosher dill pickles, pepperoncinis, pepperoncini salad (which we must confess, we’d never seen before), along with the monstrosity you see at lower left here: Pickles mashed with creamy mustard. What?

And yes, those are pickled tomatoes you see in the back. I’m still not convinced this wasn’t a dream. Loved ones, take note: There had better be a pickle bar at every significant family event from here on out.

Yes, the pickle bar at Big John’s – so wonderful. Big John’s is definitely the best place for cheesesteaks in South Jersey. Growing up with a resident pickle fiend (my dad), this place was culinary nirvana for him. Not only were there pickles – lots and lots of pickles – but they are FREEEEEEE…….Go now!

Big John does boast a quality SJ cheesesteak indeed. They also have a pretty great turkey hoagie. That and some free pickles at $7 makes a pretty nice, healthy(ish) lunch.
