Food Blob: When Is Beer Week’s Steel Reserve Event?

  • The folks over at The Standard Tap decided to host an event for Philly Beer Week that may actually be fun. Not that endless beer and food tastings aren’t fun, it’s just that… well, shouldn’t Beer Week also celebrate the rowdier aspects of beer drinking? To that end, the Tap is hosting Beer Balderdash on Tuesday, March 10th to pay homage to all of the stupid shit that goes along with drinking. The idea is that people show up and tell outlandish beer stories, be they true or untrue. Those in attendance will decide which stories are legitimate and mark accordingly on a score card. Prizes will be awarded for the most correct answers, most people stumped by an untrue story and best true beer story.
  • On a bit (just a bit) of a classier Beer Week note, Yards and Triumph Brewing Companies will be hosting the Philadelphia Real Ale Invititational at Yards Brewery on Sunday, March 15th. The event will feature an impressive line up of cask conditioned ales from breweries the likes of Flying Fish, Troegs, and Fullers. Local breweries such as Yards, Triumph, Manayunk, Allentown/Bethlehem, and Philadelphia Brewing will be there to represent as well. These types of beer tastings always seem to start on the classy side (people tasting and talking about the nuances of the beer) and end in an inevitable shit show (red faces and slurry shout-talking.) The Real Ale Invitational should be a good mix of the above mentioned classy rowdiness. Tickets are $40 in advance, and $50 at the door.
  • Beer Week isn’t the only beer event that is fast approaching. Wednesday is February 11th or 2-11, which has been declared by some as Steel Reserve Day. Known as the broke-ass drunk’s 4:20, 211 is a day to appreciate the shitty things in life like malt liquor. Or it’s actually just an excuse to for drunks to drink. According to the oracle that is wikipedia, Steel Reserve’s stylized “211″ is the midevil symbol for steel, whatever that means.
