After a little while spent in what we’ll call “Taco Limbo,” the menu at Johnny Brenda’s has been given a complete overhaul in the last week or so, with JB’s/Standard Tap co-owner/chef Paul Kimport once again at the helm. This is a very, very good thing, as Kimport seems to naturally veer the gastropub type fare he helped invent towards out-and-out soul food. The new menu is heavy on meaty entrees, fleshed out by sides like collard greens and this gratin potatoes dish, which stopped us in our tracks. Crusty in all the right places, firm in the more right places and gooey in the very best places, this gratin has a lot to say, with a black-pepper exclamation point on the end that we just loved. We haven’t tested out the menu’s more ambitious dishes yet, but we’ll let you know when we do.

agreed — tried the potatoes au gratin last week and they were amazing. the garlic smashed red potatoes were also really good. it’s nice to see a much longer and more varied list of side dishes. overall the food has improved dramatically since the summer.
oh my god! tried to order these last night but they JUST ran out of them. i am dying to get a fork into one of these. JBs definitely got it’s menu back and it’s awesome, yay paul!
