It is an idea that hurts the heart perhaps as much as consuming a bucket a day for a week, but it is a very real prospect: As we speak, corner chicken joints all over New York are rebranding themselves as “Obama Fried Chicken.” We assure you this is real, and not some horrible email forward from your racist uncle. As you may have noticed, just about every down-on-its-luck neighborhood in the city (and some that aren’t) has a smattering of Crown Fried Chicken-style knockoffs. So it almost makes a perverse kind of sense that, given the chance to rebrand oneself in a largely African-American neighborhood, one might choose a name that has come to symbolize an ultimate, remarkable and utterly positive achievement for African-Americans. But the key word here is “almost.” Almost.
