Food Blob: Philly Takes Home The Accolades

While we in Philadelphia (for the most part) love cheese steaks and cream cheese, it’s high time rest of the world recognize we have much more to bring to the table than kitschy junk food. Why can’t they see us for what we are, rather than the common perception of a gloomy puddle of fryer grease that lays between New York and DC? Recently, Philadelphia restaurants have been getting a lots national recognition and we’re pretty psyched about the love.

  • Zahav was recently named as one of Travel and Leasure Magazine’s 50 Best New Restaurants In The US. It was the only Philadelphia restaurant to make the list. This is one of many accolades that Zahav has been racking up; Owner, Chef Michael Solomonov received a nom for The James Beard Award as a rising star chef; Food and Wine named the restaurant’s Fried Cauliflower with Lebneh as one of their Ten Best Restaurant Dishes; Esquire named Zahav amongst their Best New Restaurants of 2008; Philadelphia Magazine named it Best New Restaurant in August 2008; and they made Bon Appetit’s “Hot 10 Summer Blockbuster Restaurant Openings. (That last one seemed a little silly but props nonetheless)
  • Johnny Brenda’s was recently named amongst Gourmet.com’s “Great Rock Venues With Great Food.” The article sheds a little national attention on what is common knowledge in this town but we’re still so damn proud. (sheds a single tear).
  • Marigold Kitchen was named as one of Bon Appetit’s best brunch spots. This is another no-brainer for us Philadelphians but it’s still nice to know that Marigold is bringing the Philly food scene to a national level.
  • We’ve always known that this place is a great place to eat, and not that we’ve ever been the type to brag (ahem), but nice to know that we’re getting a little love on a national level.
