Phoodie’s Guide To Philly’s James Beard Award Winners

Back in February, we gave you a detailed guide to Philadelphia’s nominees in the 2009 ultra-prestigious James Beard Awards. Certainly, these restaurants and restauranteurs represent some of the best in the city and today, as the winners have been announced, we get to see how they fared.

Stephen Starr, Starr Restaurant Organization: Nominated for Outstanding Restaurateur.
Lost to: New York City’s Drew Nieporent, Myriad Restaurant Group.

Lost to: New York City’s Dan Barber, Blue Hill; New York City’s Daniel, owned by Daniel Boulud and Joel Smilow.

Jose Garces, Amada: Nominated for Best Chef: Mid-Atlantic 
Won!

Michael Solomonov, Zahav: Nominated for Rising Star Chef of the Year
Lost to: San Fancisco’s Nate Appleman, A16

Craig LaBan, The Philadelphia Inquirer, “The Tender and the Tough”: Nominated for Newspaper Feature Writing Without Recipes
Lost to: Kristen Hinman, Riverfront Times, “The Pope of Pork.”

So really it’s more like “winner,” singular. But hey, whatever, guys. We’re Philadelphia; we know we’re good. Rocky and shit. And major props to our boy Jose Garces — we knew you could do it.
