Get Ready For The Ultimate Philadelphia Ice Cream Festival

ice-creamAs the South seceded and the country geared up for the Civil War way back in 1861, Lewis Dubois Bassett, a Quaker teacher and farmer, was busy creating the first batches of Bassetts Ice Cream at his home in Salem, NJ. Bassetts survives today as America’s oldest ice cream company (try their Butterscotch-Vanilla… it’s fantastic!), and their stand at Reading Terminal Market features the original marble countertop dating to its 1893 construction. On Saturday, July 18, Bassetts will feature prominently in The Ultimate Philadelphia Ice Cream Festival from 10 am – 4pm at the center court of Reading Terminal Market. Other local makers of frozen favorites (including Miller’s Twist, The Franklin Fountain, Uncle Dave’s Ice Cream, KōV, Gelati Di Capri, and Bredenbeck’s Bakery and Ice Cream Parlor) will join Bassetts for a day of fun events including ice cream eating contests, ice cream tastings, a root beer float drop contest, ice cream juggling, and best of all, a chance to create your own ice cream flavor using ingredients found in the Market (At 3 pm, judges will choose which new creation is the best. Hopefully they don’t have to taste too many ill-conceived flavors created by five-year-olds). The Stars & Stripes Mummers Band will also be on hand, so get ready to shake your tailfeather as you burn off all the calories you put on in the ice cream eating contest.
