This fall, Italian phoodies will have a new spot to sink their teeth into: Zavino, opening this October, will feature classic cocktails, a revolving wine and beer list, and a seasonal menu of traditional Italian specialties and gourmet pizzas. Having snagged a fabulous location on 13th street, Zavino is moving into a neighborhood that has already been established as a major restaurant destination. Head Chef Steve Gonzalez has worked under local pizza god Marc Vetri, in addition to having spent years studying and working in Italy, all of which lends a lot of cred to the already-leaked menu items. Another big plus: the restaurant will be serving from 5 pm until 2am, which is a big draw for the late-night food and wine crowd, as well as restaurant staffers. The restaurant will have a rustic, European-Cafe feeling with exposed original brick walls, giant picture windows and outdoor seating. The sketch at right shows what the space will look like after renovations are complete.
Pizzas will cost somewhere between $5 and $12, and other menu items will range between $3 and $20. Some highlights include:
- Roasted Red and Golden Beets with pistachios and goat cheese
- Artichoke Pizza with thinly sliced artichokes, Swiss chard and pecorino Romano cheese
- Polpettini Pizza with tomato sauce and provolone cheese with veal mini-meatballs
- House-Made Beef Ravioli with brown butter and sage
- Roasted Lamb with fried eggplant and mint
