Hurray For Presidentially Ordained Farmers Markets!

Obama PeachesIt should come as a surprise to absolutely no one that we are huge fans of farmers markets here at Phoodie, what with the extended coverage we’ve given to local markets over the years and the fact that we are, admittedly, obsessed with all things fruits and veg. You know who else is a fan of such things? Michelle Obama! That’s right, the First Lady has made it no secret that she is into food, what with the much-talked-about vegetable garden she planted on the South Lawn of the White House in the spring, not to mention the implications of arugula-gate back on the campaign trail. Today, the White House Farmer’s Market opens in Washington D.C. on Vermont Avenue (ed: haha, Vermont Avenue .. how fitting). We fully support the First Ladys efforts to raise national consciousness to organic, healthy and locally grown foods because, lets face it, while we mostly focus on the taste and creativity aspect on this website, food is definitely a political issue as well. Government policy plays a huge role in both how food is grown, as well as what foods are grown, and it’s heartening to see the Obamas take such a pro-active stance on both farming and organic foods as well as nutrition. We are curious to hear more information about its first day , but we highly doubt this market can match our personal fave – oh, Collingswood Farmers Market, you’ll always be our baby.
