Philly Winos Represent

With Oktoberfest fast approaching, Philadelphia area wine snobs are stepping their game up in order to keep grapes in high profile throughout the traditionally beer-focused season. Autumn is an important time of the year in the wine/vineyard world; for winemakers, harvest time is in full swing and for us city folk, wine tasting and classes are popping up aplenty in the coming weeks.

  • On Wednesday, September 30 from 6 until 8,Eric Miller, winemaker from Chadsford Winery is debuting “Terroir” a blend of seven red “hand grown” varieties. Apparently this is a wine that’s worth tasting,
  • “the wine has a bright, dark plum smell with hints of smoke and vanilla, an elegant, medium body with fine, grainy tannins and clean acidity, with flavors of plum, coffee, toffee, chocolate and red fruit”

  • If you have no idea what any of that means, you need to get your ass to school; Philadelphia Wine School, that is. It’s not cheap, but the classes are the real deal. It’s pretty much the equivalent of a college level class that covers the wine making process from vine to bottle. Interested parties need only to visit the Philadelphia Wine School’s website to register. Classes start in early October, so get on it.
  • Wine School isn’t the only educational racket in town. Uncorking the Past; Ancient Ales, Wines and Extreme Beverages takes place on October 8th at 6pm at the Penn Museum. It offers a historical perspective on boozing through the ages. Biomolecular archaeologist Pat McGovern, a Penn Professor and leading mind in the world of ancient fermented beverages teamed up with Sam Calagione, Founder of Dogfish Head Brewery to resurrect ancient styles of alcohol. At the reception attendees will have the opportunity to taste several ancient brews from Dogfish Head, Dock Street, and William Brothers Brewing Company. Also, old timey wines such as ancient Egyptian wine will also be available for tasting.
  • So take that, Oktoberfest!
(Note: Oktoberfest roundup soon to come.)
