Our friend/Fishtown real estate magnate/thespian Bob Murphy has had a twinkle in his eye called The Music Fountain for a few years now. It’d be a neighborhood ice cream parlor, he’s always said, that would also be a gathering place with coffee and, of course, music. Earlier this month, The Music Fountain quietly opened, and it is a period-perfect Mad Men-esque delight. They even have a soda jerk! Let’s take a quick walk-through, shall we?

Perched at 308 East Girard Avenue (at Marlborough St), the Music Fountain is awash in retro, from front to back.

You’ll find that 1950s-style crushed pearl look at the counter, along with a menu of ice cream classics, plus flavored sodas. (Real-deal Cherry Coke? Check.)

Adorned all along the walls are photos of Philly music legends, including The Intruders, Hall & Oates and even Cozy Morley.

And the ice cream? It’s all Bassett’s. (And the coffee, by the way, is La Colombe.)

The jukebox is stocked with oldies, and it’s free. Free!

And all told, there’s just a sweet, family-friendly (but also design-nerd classic) vibe here that can’t be beat. If you’re looking to do something wholesome (for once), this is the move. Also, coming soon: Free wi-fi.

Congrads Bob! I can’t wait to come and check it out.
I’m ripping out all this boring butcher block and replacing it with Crushed Pearl countertoppage. HOT
Whoa..Bassetts and La Colombe? Run, don’t walk!
I’m glad to see someone opened a store like this. I’ve thought for a long time the coffee house/ice cream shop could be a winner. A casual place for people to relax, or even work, plus family friendly for the afterschool or early evening crowd.
The wi-fi is an important part to the equation; hope that comes on line (online, ha!) soon.
