It’s A Beautiful Day For Pie

mannaWe know that today, dear readers, you’re all either wondering how you’re going to find 8 cheap, plastic baby dolls for your Octomom costumes (not to mention wondering who’s going to be your Jon Gosselin look-alike date), or trying to find time to go rifle through the dregs at I. Goldberg for that sailor outfit you’ve always wanted to sport – and well you should be. After the Halloween shakedowns, though, check your bank balance, and then give some your paltry unemployment earnings to MANNA.

Based in Philadelphia since 1990, MANNA (Metropolitan Area Neighborhood Nutrition Alliance), “offers home-delivered, medically appropriate meals … to men, women and children living with HIV/AIDS, cancer and other life-threatening illness.” MANNA’s Thanksgiving-y Pie in the Sky Fundraiser is in its 13th year and is MANNA’s largest signature fundraising event of the year.

Pies are on sale through November 20 and are available for pick-up on November 24, just in time for you to take them out of their aluminum pans and put them in a nice pie dish so your mom thinks (1) you know how to bake awesome pies and (2) you really do appreciate the extra cash she’s thrown your way while you were on the dole this summer.

It’s for a great cause, the pies are locally made by Sweet Lilly’s Heavenly Desserts, and all the pies we’ve eaten from MANNA over the years (read, SWEET POTATO PIES) have been delicious. Behold, the pie menu: sweet potato pie, pumpkin pie, southern pecan pie, apple crumb pie, and what sounds like a chocolate cheesecake called the US Airways SkyPie. All are $25, except the SkyPie because, well, it’s called the US Airways SkyPie, but buying the SkyPie does enter you into a drawing for a US Airways gift card worth $1000, so maybe it’s worth it. Also, there’s cheesecake in it.

Whichever one you pick, MANNA and its clients will surely appreciate the help and the good will, and you will surely enjoy scraping the gooey bits from the pan with a spoon while hiding from your family under the covers in your old bedroom Thanksgiving night.
