The weather for the next few nights is averaging in the upper 30s and lower 40s, and sunset tonight occurs at 4:57 PM. Seasonal Affective Disorder has already kicked into high gear, and is making everyone stiffen with dread. (Brad Lidge, you’re not helping, either.) For those of you who live in lofts, get ready for either another 5 months of wearing your jacket inside, or another expensive series of gas bills. Winter’s coming regardless if you want it to or not, but there is a time-tested remedy for the it’s-getting-so-cold-and-I-hardly-see-the-sun-anymore-because-of-my-job blues: Bars and restaurants that have fireplaces. Here’s our list of places to cozy up as winter approaches, in no particular order:
· The cozy Standard Tap, which received a Best of 2008 Phoodie honorable mention for “Best Bar to Call Home” has a fireplace in their upstairs bar area. 901 N 2nd St (215) 238-0630
· The posh XIX Nineteen has a stunning fireplace. The fare is expensive, but they do have a happy hour with $6 specialty drinks from 5-7. 200 S Broad St, Park Hyatt Philadelphia at the Bellevue 215-790-1919
· “Philly oldest tavern,” McGillin’s Olde Ale House, should be putting up their decadent floor-to-ceiling Christmas decorations soon. Is tinsel flame retardant? Fireplace on the first floor. 1310 Drury St. 215-735-5562
· Brigid’s is a cozy Belgian beer bar in the Art Museum area (their beer list is enormous) with a fireplace. Side note: Great fries to accompany the brews. 726 N. 24th St. 215-232-3232
· The Devil’s Den has a great fireplace that opens on both sides. They also have a huge beer list. 1148 S 11th St (215) 339-0855
· Mahogany on Walnut is the place to go if you want cigars and whiskies/bourbons/scotch. It’s a boys-club kind of fancy, with literally mostly-male clientele, but they do have a fireplace where you can drink your $14 single malt and smoke your “Winston Churchhill.” 1524 Walnut St (215) 732-3982
· Continental Mid-Town turns their glass-enclosed summer rooftop deck into an urban ski lodge for the winter months, with a circular couch that surrounds a free-standing fireplace. 1801 Chestnut St. 215-567-1800
· The fireplace at Sassafras in Olde City only adds to the already lovely ambiance, and we’ve heard rumors that the women’s bathroom is wonderful. 48 S 2nd St (215) 925-2317
· Race Street Cafe has a good fireplace as well as a good beer selection. 208 Race St. (215) 627-6181
· The (sometimes) charming Plough & the Stars in Olde City has a beautiful fireplace, which is not surprising considering that the bar is is original to the old Corn Exchange Building. 123 Chestnut St. 215-733-0300

It make be kinda douchey, but Snackbar has a great fireplace and is super cozy.
Just heard Tommy Up just took a flamethrower to a gasoline doused P.Y.T. and is now tweeting about having Philly’s largest and only walk-in fireplace.
Franklin Bar (Mortgage & Investment Co., etc) has a fireplace… not sure if they light it, though?
Also kinda douchey, but doesn’t Jones have a fireplace?
Snack for sure, not douchey at all. Just location impaired – not close to any public trans, but the new menu is sick as shit. Will be doing a write up soon.
