Cosmi’s Deli: Best Sandwich In America, Or Just Best Sandwich You’ve Never Had?

cosmioldphoto2

Behold, Cosmi’s Deli, which has been open since 1932 on the corner of 8th and Dickinson streets in South Philly. And while many others — Primo’s, Pat’s, Geno’s, et al. — are frequently sited in these Best Sandwich Ever-type polls (and indeed, have walls lined with certificates proclaiming such distinctions), somehow it has come to pass that humble Cosmi’s cheesesteak has been nominated for “Best Sandwich in America” by the women’s pop culture website Lemondrop. Do you agree? Or just want to rep Philly in a contest that probably only employees of Lemondrop care about? Well, hurry! Voting closes at the end of the day, and well, just look at these old Cosmis. Don’t you think they deserve nice things? What is wrong with you? Just go vote for them already. What, you want Vegas to win it? Seriously: What is wrong with you.

Um, Cosmi’s has won Philly Mag’s Best of Philly cheesesteak twice, so it is hardly humble. But I am convinced it is because of a combination their proximity to the big two and off the beaten path appeal. It is a good cheesesteak, particularly on the scooped seeded roll (you get an option), but certainly not the best in Philly, let alone the country. Their hoagies are better and among the best in South Philly.

The best thing about Cosmi’s is that they are open ’til 9, deliver, and take credit cards. Most of the old-school South Philly sandwich shops close after lunch and are cash only.

Never had their cheesesteak, but their South Philly Italian hoagie is insane. Might have to make a trip over there tonight.

Great to see Cosmis get national press, outside of Philly all the love goes to the same few places over and over.
Agree with above, the steaks are good but their hoagies are really the thing to get. One of the best in the city, at least in the “places open after 5pm” category.

I’m pretty sure Cosmi’s gets mention in Maxim, Details and magazines of that sort fairly regularly since Philly became trendy in those magazines demographics. Really, I don’t want the lid totally blown off it. Who here really wants to stand through the same sort of Pat’s/Geno’s line to get their Cosmi’s fix?

Personally, on top of the quality, I like Cosmi’s because they treat you like an actual human being as opposed to the usual tourist steak assembly line feeding trough. The place keeps me in the neighborhood, perhaps to the detriment of my waistline.

    What, no love for Koch’s?

@Marcou, Koch’s sandwiches are truly beautiful things; but not as convenient to me as Cosmi’s. If I lived in W. Philly, I could probably live on two of Koch’s monsters a week.
