America’s Favorite Dumpling On A Stick: The Corndog

Philadelphia is known for many things; sadly, we are not known for our corndogs. You’d think that Philly would be more of a corndog town; all of our trademark foods are unhealthy like corn dogs. Cheesesteaks, cream cheese, soft pretzels, and Breyers, and not a famous Philly corndog in sight. Corndogs seem to fit right in to that kind of gross yet delicious junk food catagory. Not to mention that there’s something wonderful about meat on a stick that appeals to all of humankind. The corndog triggers our inner animal instincts which tell us to hunt down and devour any and all hotdogs wrapped in cornbread that lay in our path. What of the corndog in Philly, then? Does anyone locally hear its cries? Turns out, the answer is YES:

  • Corndogs can be classy too. Up until about a month ago veal corndogs were available at Lacroix. Say what you will about the inhumane treatment of baby cows, but once their meat is enveloped in cornbread, all sins are forgiven.
  • Sister bars Tattooed Mom and Sugar Mom’s have probably the least classy corndogs in town. Not that they’re bad tasting — in fact they’re wonderful, but they are clearly prepackaged and plopped into a fryer. The upside is that often, but not always, they have vegetarian corndogs to be enjoyed as well.
  • National Mechanics keeps it real by keeping corndogs on the “Nostalgics” portion of their menu, which are also very good.
  • The best Philly corndogs found to date, however, reside amongst the glittering bowling alleys of North Bowl. These corndogs are clearly homemade and come reasonably priced with a side of tots no less (don’t get us started on tots.) They offer Veggie Corn Dogs as well.
  • With ground breakers like North Bowl and these others, who knows, this great cheesesteak city may one day become a corndog town as well. Someday in the near future, there may even be garishly illuminated, xenophobic corndogs places located on opposite corners from each other somewhere down in South Philly. One can only hope, and wait.
