Chruscik — alternately known as chrusciki — is a Polish treat of fried dough dusted with powdered sugar, and while it has traditionally appeared at weddings and other occasions, here in Philly, chrusciki always seems to be around at Christmas. Some folks hate it, decrying it as a the funnel cake of Eastern Europe while also citing its obviously unhealthy attributes (it’s traditionally fried in lard). But not us. Like many in the area, we believe that chrusciki is only a few letters away from Christmas itself, and now that the holidays are oh-so-close, it has a place at the table right next to Stauffer’s Chocolaty Stars — and they’re both probably waiting for you right now in the Weird Old People Food aisle of your local supermarket. We suggest you pick up some, if only because you never know when your old Polish uncle is going to show up. For the more adventurous among you, here’s a recipe from Martha. If you make some, dear God, please do bring it by the office.

Where can they be purchased?
We found some just tonight at Wegmans in Virginia made by White Eagle Bakery out of Philly…yum
