The year 2010 marks the 200th birthday of Philadelphia native Lorenzo Langstroth, the “Father of American Beekeeping.” Raised on Front Street and educated at Yale, Langstroth was given his moniker as he invented the movable frame beehive that we all remember so well from Reading Rainbow. Langstroth’s beehive allowed for the undisturbed research of an insect that is apparently responsible for pollinating one-third of our diet and is suffering worldwide from the current “colony collapse crisis.” The movable frame beehive relies on an insect instinct known as “bee space” which can only be described as The Force for bugs. To honor Lorenzo Langstroth’s 200 birthday, The Philadelphia Beekeepers’ Guild, Montgomery County Beekeepers’ Association and the Chester County Beekeepers’ Association are hosting a celebration of the prestigious bee-man’s life tomorrow in Mount Airy. The event, at the Unitarian Society of Germantown, will feature presentations by Carl Flatow, Barbara Ceiga, and Marc Hoffman. All presenters will lend relevance and perspective to Langstroth’s Life. The public is invited to this evening of celebration, entertainment, enlightenment and planning, Thursday, Jan. 21, 7 PM, at the Unitarian Society of Germantown, 6511 Lincoln Drive, Philadelphia.
