It’s such good news we almost can’t comprehend it: Philly’s Reading Terminal Market enjoyed 5.8 million visits in 2009, the highest total in the Market’s storied 118-year history, it was announced yesterday. And in a recession year (boy, was it ever), RTM vendors also did $21.4 million in business last year — an increase of 3.8% over 2008. What does it all mean? Well, lots of things. For one, it means more tourists passed through, of course, but it also means that more people have finally started to use the Terminal as food source. Sales of fresh foods (meat, fish, produce, etc.) were up 7.3% from last year. It’s that last fact that made us all warm and fuzzy inside. Because in reality, the Terminal is much more than a tourist attraction or a great place to get lunch (though indeed it is both) — it’s also one of the best resources in the city. If you’re not already using it that way, you should. You will thank yourself in many ways.

It’s one of the best reasons to live in the area. It never fails to “wow” my out-of-town visitors.
This is great news. And I agree, Reading Terminal is one of the best resources Philly has to offer. It’s so much fun just to wander around, people and food watch, and get the experience, whether you’re a tourist or a longstanding Philadelphian.
i was in the terminal for the first time. i ordered soul food from a place called delila’s – i could not read their sign above the food – the food was the worst soul food i have ever ate. i could not eat it – why – it was cold, the corn bread was so thick i could not swallow it, the chicken wings was cold and not done. the mac and cheese was dry and cold -they ran out of mac and cheese and i add to wait more then ten minutes for them to bring a new pan and my chicken wings was just sitting there not under heat. they keep the food warm with hot water. they use no gloves and pick up the chicken wings with their hands. i was sick and should not have ordered after i seen the owner wiping around the food trays with a dirty cloth. they put their dirty hands in the containers and move the food around without gloves. they must not have inspectors visit. i would not recommend any one to visit their place. when you have had the best you can not settle for this mess.
Wow, a yelper just walked in. Every merchant is not an A , but overall RTM is a priceless institution and my favorite resource in the city!
Between Iovine’s, OK Lee, and the Fair Food Stand, fresh produce in Philly doesn’t get any better. And be sure to grab a cup of Old City Coffee on the way out… best coffee in the city hands down.
Thanks for the update.
