Celebrating National Frozen Food Month

Remembered today as the forefather of frozen foods (and namesake of the Birds Eye brand), Clarence Birdseye developed efficient technology for quickly freezing and packing food, which allowed it to be stored for long periods while retaining its flavor. But before finding success in the marketplace, Birdseye’s first company, Birdseye Seafoods, Inc., went bankrupt due to consumer disinterest in the product. Nowadays, though, we have the National Frozen & Refrigerated Foods Association to make sure that never, ever happens again. Armed with their mighty penguin logo, the NFRA is currently celebrating National Frozen Food Month, encouraging stores to set up displays to remind us how much we consumers really do love the brands the NFRA represents: How would we get by without a reserve of Hot Pockets, Totino’s, and Lean Cuisine (not sure how On-Cor made its way into such rarified company, but whatever) in the freezer at all times? Stores judged to have the best National Frozen Food Month displays will receive the prestigious Golden Penguin Award (seriously, we’re not making this up). They’re also giving away $10,000 in a sweepstakes through their consumer-geared site Easy Home Meals, which you can enter here. Have you seen any National Frozen Food Month displays at your local store? What’s your favorite frozen food? Let us know in the comments.
