Philly Beer Week: Closing Weekend Picks

All right, are you sure you still wanna do this? To be honest, all the events are starting to blur together — you can still drink with every brewer, you can still have that prix fixe beer dinner. With the sassiest Friday event being Pimp My Rye, Pimp Yourself at Head House (where you can drink out of a PIMPED OUT FIRKIN, sorry, no Xzibit included, and compete in a bling contest, 9 p.m. – 12 a.m.), it seems like the beer men themselves are getting a little burnt out. But still, we’ll see it through for you, dear reader, or at least so we can properly enjoy Sunday’s Dance of the Macrobrews.

Feelin’ dumb from all those bleary-eyed hangovers? Act civilized and learn something (then feel dumb all over again).

Beer Class on “Belgium All Stars” with beer writer Lynn Hoffman at the Trolley Car Diner, includes appetizers. Friday, 7 p.m. –  9 p.m. Tickets are $24 plus $10 materials fee, available here.

20th Annual Jackson Tutored Tastings with Randy Mosher on “Beer as Art” (what, you thought you were going to be learning some beer trivia? this is serious shit.). First hour is a tutored tasting, then you’re left to your own devices for the last two hours with over 50 different beers. Saturday, three sessions: 12 p.m. – 3 p.m., 4 p.m. – 7 p.m., 8 p.m. – 11 p.m. Tickets are $50, available here.

It’s a race to see who can down a double SHAME burger (that’s a burger + scrapple + cheese + a fried egg – 5 years of your life, pictured) and four 6 oz. Weyerbacher beers at The Wishing Well, Saturday, 4 p.m. – 1 a.m. $20 to enter.

Join (or just watch and be happy you’re not doing the 6-7 mile run) Dock Street’s Third Annual Beer Run, Sunday, 12 p.m. – 2 p.m. The run starts at City Hall and involves challenges along the way. The whole thing is followed by a block party at Dock Street Brewery.

The end of Beer Week brings cheap Beer Week leftovers (can’t figure out if that sounds appealing or not), so head to bars like O’Neals, Broad Axe Tavern and Swift Half Pub on Saturday. They’ll be selling heavily discounted drafts from 11 a.m. on. It’s also buy-one-get-one at The Institute from 12 p.m. – 4 p.m. By Sunday, everyone’s calling them scraps…still cheap though! Wake up and go straight to any of these bars for all day specials: Rembrandt’s, London Grill, O’Neals, Bridgid’s Bar and Restaurant, Good Dog Bar & Restaurant.
