When you think of eating local, the last thing that may come to mind is chocolate. But John Doyle and Kira Baker have been making handcrafted chocolates that source local products since 2000. John & Kira’s website shows an array of tasty flavors such as Lavender Honey and Tangy Orange and Garden Rosemary which have us as excited as, well, a kid in a candy store.
What we really love about the company is that each box includes a description of the growers behind the flavors incorporated into the chocolate. Take for example the Mighty Urban Garden Mint Chocolate Bar where the mint that comes directly from an organic farming project at West Philadelphia High School. Or the Lavender Honey chocolates that feature honey from Draper’s Apiaries in Tioga County, PA. Though not all the flavors are local (for example, ginger from the island of Molokai,) we commend them for being front-runners in what we hope will become a sweet trend.
John & Kira’s takes orders for on their websites (hint: the holidays are coming up) and they can also be found around Philly at The Fair Food Farm Stand in Reading Terminal Market, and at Philadelphia’s Farmer’s Market.
