Definitely file this one under Really Great And Very Cool News: The folks behind the Marathon group of local restaurants will launch Marathon Farm, a 15,750 square foot urban farm, on Monday, March 21 at 1 p.m. with a press conference led by Mayor Michael Nutter. The Farm will serve a host of purposes: Obviously, they’ll be growing food to serve at the various Marathon restaurants, but they’ll also sell what they grow at an affordable farm stand on site. In addition, there will be a variety of educational and community outreach programs, and a community garden for neighbors, among other things. Owner Cary Borish and Farm Director Patrick Dunn will oversee the farm, and are establishing the Marathon Loves Philadelphia Foundation (501c3) to stage charitable works from the farm. If you’d like to support the cause, check out their Kickstarter campaign.
