Today is Fastnacht Day in Philadelphia — the day where you eat as many hole-less donuts as you can before Lent starts. A sort of PA Dutch version of Mardi Gras or Fat Tuesday, Fastnacht comes out of an Old Country custom, with similar traditions celebrated in Germany and Switzerland as well. You can get your fastnachts at Haegel’s Bakery in the Northeast or plenty of others around the city. This is the biggest day of the year for some bakeries and for those that love cream, chocolate, or jelly filled donuts. Which is, like, everyone. Happy Fastnacht Day!
