href="http://www.thebelgiancafe.com/">The Belgian Cafe, not make the top 50 Bar List!?!?! It boggles the mind. Maybe we just have a biased view, because some of our favorite bars, in order, are – The Belgian Cafe, Grace Tavern, Monk’s, and Nodding Head (all under the same ownership, and all of which thankfully made the Top 50). The Belgian Cafe has a beer list you can barely get through before they ask you what you’d like. It’s ok though! We usually just point to something, and we always end up happy. The staff offers some amazingly sound beer advice too.

The menu is equally as thorough. We’ve just about tried everything, and everything is exceptioanal. We’re partial to their homemade vegan burgers, and we’re not even vegan! Any of the 7 variations will do – but definitely at the top of our list is the Merckx Burger, with brie and pickled jalapenos. The waitstaff at The Belgian Cafe, is hands-down the best I’ve experienced in this city. They’re friendly, but not cloying, check up on you at just the right times. A great appetizer is the Sauteed Buffalo-style Shrimp with with bleu cheese fritters and diced celery. And of course, their fries are to die for.

All of the restaurants, owned by Tom Peters and Fergus Carey, have their share of Friday and Saturday night crazies (one man asked, and I quote, “I’ll have a Vegan Burger – Medium”). But don’t be put off by that, nor by Craig LaBan’s scoffing review of The Belgian’s scallops, because three years later, they’ve got it down. Plus, if you’re gonna go for shellfish, have some common sense and do it on the weekend, when they’re guaranteed to be fresh. A lot of the restaurants in Fairmount suffer from poor service and overpriced menus because they cater to mostly tourists, but Belgian? Not so much.

This season, make it a point to go experience the coziness that is The Belgian Cafe. For dessert, get the Piping Hot Doughnuts, which are served with Caramel (that’s actually burnt sugar – and not caramel sauce from a jar). They’re perfect for a cold day. They make them fresh on the spot and they’re well worth the wait. Ask for them well-done (they’ll know what you mean), so that they’re dark brown and crispy, and pair it with your favorite Irish whiskey. Trust us.

Oh an if you’re 18 or younger, and you just want to go eat, be sure to read <a
