href="http://www.phoodie.info/2011/03/22/dapper-dogs-derailed/">the hot dog vendors busted by the cops last month, have found themselves in a befuddling situation since then. The vendors, formerly stationed at Second and Poplar streets, were told that they had to close shop not because of their late hours of operation, but because of the street they were selling on. Food vending of any kind is prohibited on 2nd Street, but in a strange twist, for once, the blame does not fall on the Department of Licenses and Inspections. As The Dapper Dog has tried to get back on its feet and back to their usual spot, they haven’t had any luck dealing with this peculiar restriction on their business.

Back in February of last year, the Dapper Dog guys pitched their idea to a zoning committee and, without any opposition, opened that May. The very next month, an ordinance was passed prohibiting vending on Second St. between Girard and Spring Garden. Within the last few months, more vendors came to Second St., which may have provoked the enforcement of the ordinance that up to that point had been ignored. However, Second Street doesn’t fall on the list of prohibited streets as far as L&I is concerned, and as best we understand it, The Dapper Dog should legally be allowed to vend there. As of now, they have been vending at the old Arbol Cafe with petitions in hand, and Tuesday through Thursday for lunch at 13th and Norris streets.

The Dapper Dog will not likely be back at 2nd and Poplar, but they’ve been trying to come up with a compromise with the NLNA, who are the ones that requested the ordinance in the first place. Public outcry seems to be on the side of the Dog guys though, which is what you’d expect in a neighborhood that’s dominated by one developer and whose neighborhood association, for reasons known only to them, passed a ridiculous ordinance to squash small businesses.

Save The Date: Memphis Taproom Beer Garden Grand Opening, April 23

Beer

Events

Hot Dogs
<guid

What were these dealers dishing out, you may ask? Hot dogs. Amidst all of the other crime in the city, the great PPD have decided to hone in on The Dapper Dog, the hot dog vendor that parks outside Standard Tap at 2nd and Poplar streets. Although Dapper Dog has been getting away with this egregious crime for around a year now, they couldn’t stay under the radar any longer. Admittedly, it is illegal under the Philadelphia Code to street vendors to serve food from midnight to 7AM, but does that mean they have to enforce it? The future of Dapper Dog is up in the air, but we can hope for the best.

Hey SugarHouse, What Happened?

Hot Dogs

menus

restaurants

SugarHouse Casino — due to open this Thursday — has just posted the menus, found here on their website, for two of the three restaurants inside. The first restaurant, The Refinery, is described as a “hip, modern restaurant overlooking the Delaware River.” Apparently someone overlooked hip and modern when coming up with the menu: With options like “Ham or Turkey on Pretzel” and hot dogs offered, we cringe at how badly it bores us. While it does appear they have what could be some tasty burgers, they too seem to be lacking creativity. They do have an outdoor patio, which we have to admit, will have a nice view during the summer months.

The second menu posted is for Jacks Sandwiches and Sweets. Jacks is open 24 hours for round-the-clock munchies. It appears to be an average sandwich shop offering classics like sausage and peppers hogies and Cobb salads. Also listed are breakfast sandwiches, soft pretzels, shakes, and hot dogs. Again, hot dogs. Did we miss something about casinos and hot dogs? Is it because you can eat a hot dog with one hand and play the slot machine with the other? Someone please fill us in on this one.

There is one more restaurant listed, Lucky Red, but the menu has yet to be posted. The website says that Lucky Red will serve “delicious stadium-style food, drinks and all the energy of being…at the game.” So I’m gonna go out on a limb here and predict they too, will have hot dogs.

The thing that confuses us most (aside from the hot dogs) is how did such mundane restaurants show up at SugarHouse in the first place? With Philadelphia being a city of fine dining, why did no one (Stephen Starr? Jose Garces?) partner up with the new casino? Perhaps we should chew this one over with a hot dog.

Give The Dog Some Love

Hot Dogs

Openings

Uncategorized
<guid

As reported by KYW, they’re holding a contest to select which of three proposed wieners will become the new “signature hot dog” for Citizens Bank Park; online voting has just started and will run until April 4th. All three contenders will be served at Phillies exhibition games on April 2nd and 3rd, so unless you make it to those games, you’ll have to use your imagination. Fortunately, the three dogs up for consideration are described in detail on the site. They include…

The South Philly Hot Dog: An all-beef dog, topped with broccoli rabe, spicy roasted peppers and sharp provolone on a crusty Italian roll.

The Olde Philadelphia Hot Dog: An all-beef dog, topped with Amish pepper hash, dill pickle and yellow mustard on a poppyseed roll.

The Summer Hot Dog: An all-beef dog, topped with cucumbers, pickled onion salsa and ancho-pepper sauce on a pretzel roll.

While whichever dog wins is likely to put a fairly serious dent in the ol’ wallet/pocketbook, we realize that shelling out cash at a baseball game is all a part of the “experience,” so we’re going to go ahead and throw our official endorsement behind the Olde Philadelphia (pictured) on account of its whimsical spelling of “olde” and use of a poppyseed roll. But we can’t help feeling that “Citizens Bank Frank” has a nice ring to it… a definite missed opportunity for both rhyme and additional corporate branding. Anyhow, go here to vote for your favorite. After you cast your vote, the site doesn’t show you which dog is currently in the lead, so it looks like we’ll all have to wait until April 4th to find out the winner.

Amish Dining In The City

Farming

Hot Dogs
<guid

You’d think that Philly would be more of a corndog town; all of our trademark foods are unhealthy like corn dogs. Cheesesteaks, cream cheese, soft pretzels, and Breyers, and not a famous Philly corndog in sight. Corndogs seem to fit right in to that kind of gross yet delicious junk food catagory. Not to mention that there’s something wonderful about meat on a stick that appeals to all of humankind. The corndog triggers our inner animal instincts which tell us to hunt down and devour any and all hotdogs wrapped in cornbread that lay in our path.	What of the corndog in Philly, then? Does anyone locally hear its cries? Turns out, the answer is YES:

Corndogs can be classy too. Up until about a month ago veal corndogs were available at Lacroix. Say what you will about the inhumane treatment of baby cows, but once their meat is enveloped in cornbread, all sins are forgiven.

Sister bars Tattooed Mom and Sugar Mom’s have probably the least classy corndogs in town. Not that they’re bad tasting — in fact they’re wonderful, but they are clearly prepackaged and plopped into a fryer. The upside is that often, but not always, they have vegetarian corndogs to be enjoyed as well.

National Mechanics keeps it real by keeping corndogs on the “Nostalgics” portion of their menu, which are also very good.

The best Philly corndogs found to date, however, reside amongst the glittering bowling alleys of North Bowl. These corndogs are clearly homemade and come reasonably priced with a side of tots no less (don’t get us started on tots.) They offer Veggie Corn Dogs as well.

With ground breakers like North Bowl and these others, who knows, this great cheesesteak city may one day become a corndog town as well. Someday in the near future, there may even be garishly illuminated, xenophobic corndogs places located on opposite corners from each other somewhere down in South Philly. One can only hope, and wait.
