Let Pringles Soundtrack Your Summer Jams

Who doesn’t love Pringles? You don’t love Pringles? Why? Pringles are awesome.

All of that aside, Pringles is running a pretty great promotion on their website. They are giving out Pringles can speakers, or a single speaker, or the electronics to make your own. To be honest, it’s not exactly clear. But all you have to do is buy 4 cans of “Super Stack” Pringles and save the receipts. After that, download and print the .pdf over on their website. Fill out the form, circle the Pringles items on your receipts, and mail them back to Pringles (we secretly love that this involves actual postage on our part). After that, “wait (at most 10 to 12 weeks) … until your speaker arrives.”

Once your Pringles cans arrive you will be the envy of all of your barbecuing friends (unless the speakers sound terrible, then you’ll only be the envy for the first 5 minutes).

7-11 Dabbles In Veganism

It’s a little ridiculous, some of the things that people boast are vegan, like Oreos. Seriously? So, no animals, no dairy, but it’s cool to pump your guts full of fat and refined sugar? That’s not to say that all vegans believe in this, but we can count at least a handful that have brought up this fact. We would assume that die-hard vegans consider these refined sugar treats to be against their diet because many companies still use bone char in the refining process. None the less, the lowliest of convenient stores are hopping on the vegan wagon. 7-Eleven has picked out for us 5 items, currently in stock that they can safely label as vegan, including this scrumptious-looking cherry pie. However, 7-Eleven has recently added some more vegan meals to their repertoire, like artichoke spinach noodles, vegetable lo mein and two types of dumplings.

“There was demand in the New York and Philadelphia area, not only from our customers but from our our employees and franchisees, some of whom are vegetarians,” Margaret Chabris, director of corporate communications told the NY Daily News. Right now, eight 7-Elevens in Manhattan are participating in this test run on the $6 items. If it’s a success, stores across the U.S. may join them.

Snyder’s Trying the Merge Again, Second Time’s the Charm?

Snyder’s of Hanover has been making moves. Last year, the pretzel guys nearly bought out Utz to become a salty, crunchy powerhouse, but the deal fell through (after the Federal Trade Commission asked for more details. Sketch?). Now, Snyder’s is merging with food company Lance Inc. Lance makes Cape Cod Potato Chips and Stella D’oro, those Italian dessert snacks that look like they would be so much better freshly out of the oven. The most worrisome thing, though, is that Snyder’s will soon be called Snyder’s-Lance Inc. What’s that gonna look like on our beloved brown pretzel bags?

Yay Or Nay: Tyrrell’s Sweet Chilli & Red Pepper Potato Chips

Tyrrell’s Potato Chips hail from Herefordshire in the jolly old UK, so we suppose it might be more culturally sensitive to call them “crisps.” (However, in what is perhaps the first move ever by the English foodies to assimilate into American culture, it clearly says “potato chips” on the bag. We don’t know how to feel about this.) And where we looked a few weeks ago at Zapp’s Limited-Edition Spicy Creole Tomato Potato Chips — a zesty Creole take on the classic “BBQ” style potato chip — today we look at Tyrell’s very British take on the same subject matter. Note that both were reluctant to call themselves “BBQ,” although it’s instantly clear to the taster that a lot of the same elements are in play: A tomato and onion powder base, dotted with spicy notes, and away we go. The result? Tyrrell’s spice mixture, which includes Cayenne, Parsley, Ginger, Basil, Liquorice Powder and Star Anise is a classy (dare we say it?) variation on something that had no busy being classy in the first place, but we dig it anyway. Translation: If Zapp’s were ZZ Top, Tyrrell’s Sweet Chilli & Red Pepper Potato Chips are John Mayall’s Blues Breakers.

Final Judgment: JOLLY GOOD, or: YAY!

Yay Or Nay: Zapp’s Limited-Edition Spicy Creole Tomato Potato Chips, Spiked With Tabasco Sauce

It’s been a while since we did a Yay Or Nay, but these babies, encountered in line for a sammich at Palm Market today, are firing on so many cylinders that we had to table whatever we were doing for a few moments, just to consider them. Around the shell of Lousiana’s beloved Zapp’s Potato Chips are two veneers: A “spicy creole tomato” dust/flavor, and around that, some good ol’ fashioned TABASCO® brand Pepper Sauce to make it all pop. Hot damn. And guess what? They had it all: The Zapp’s chip was just the right thickness, kinda crunchy and very “live,” and that seasoning combo was a heavenly BBQ-type flavor that was just not to be denied, even as the heat slightly rose. Would we eat these every day? Hell no (or at least we’d deny it to our primary care provider). But when we do, does it feel great just to be alive? Sure does. Zapp’s Limited-Edition Spicy Creole Tomato Potato Chips, we are happy to have known ya.

Final Judgement: YAY.
