Over the past several months, local artist Sean Martorana has been commissioned by a number of local Philadelphia businesses to help bring their spaces to life through custom art installations and murals, and to decorate the exterior of their businesses with unique window paintings. And he’s been so successful at it — bringing his touch to spaces as disparate as Cafe Estelle and Indy Hall — that he’s now going into business doing just that. We have to admit, he’s got a great eye. Above, Martorana takes his hand to Cafe Estelle.

Pizza Brain needs a pizza oven, so Johnny Brenda’s is hosting “For Pizza’s Sake,” a night of live music where all proceeds will go towards purchasing a pizza over for Pizza Brain on Saturday, June 25th.

The $15 ticket price gets you in the door for live music from The Flying Lasagna Brothers, Pizza Face (fittingly), Auctioneer, Pattern is Smoothness (“Pattern is Movement and friends playing your favorites R&B Hits”) and Neutral Milk Motel (a Neutral Milk Hotel cover band playing “In The Aeroplane Over the Sea” in full plus other NMH tracks).

So if you love pizza (and who doesn’t? What are you … a communist?) show up for a fun night of music, and surely pizza themed madness.

Happiness, thy name is Krispy Kreme.

Last Wednesday, Krispy Kreme Doughnuts opened its doors on 16th and Chestnut Streets for the first time. According to Philly Chit Chat, when the doors opened at 6:00AM, first in line to enter was Ryan Hatt, baker, blogger, and Philadelphia Zoo employee. Being first in line paid off for Ryan, who now gets a dozen doughnuts every week for a whole year (while the second to tenth people in line get a dozen once a month).

Hatt told Philly Chit Chat that he lined up at 4:30PM to wait in line for the opening, even though he had never had Krsipy Kreme Doughnuts before. He blogs about his baking at Ryan’s Baking Blog, so keep your eyes out there for blogs about Krispy Kreme, weight gain, or that bloated all the time feeling. Word on the street is that Hatt downed nine of his dozen before he left the store that day.

Yesterday afternoon we revealed the winners of the Philebrity Awards. Drew Lazor from City Paper’s Meal Ticket, won for Phoodie of the Year. We think his promo video had something to do with it.

PYT won for Business of the Year. You can’t go wrong when you combine food, booze, music, dancing and milkshakes! The brothers even brought their mom, “very proud of her boys,” on stage (it was her birthday) to receive the award. How cute!

Dusk falls upon many outdoor farmers’ markets this week. We are determined to get the last of their fall bounty before Thanksgiving! Today was the last day for the Fountain Farmer’s Market on Tasker Street, East Passyunk Ave, at 11th. There might be a few stragglers there next Wednesday, but the Amish have packed it in. What did we pick up today? Green Aisle Grocery sold us on their apricot, raisin, and craisin English Muffins from Ric’s Bread in Lancaster, saying that once we tried them, we’d “never go back to just any old Thomas’s English Muffins.” Seeing as though we just ran out of our store bought english muffs at home, we couldn’t pass that up. We also picked up some Goat Milk Soap from Misty Creek Dairy, in Leola, PA. Dude, it smells so good! Also, in the last seconds, we picked up a very strange looking pumpkin pie from Kings Bakery, that actually wound up being really eggy-tasting, but very good! I think we’re gonna make it a point to purposefully make a very eggy pumpkin pie this year for Thanksgiving.

There’s still a few markets you can catch this week before they close, if you peruse the Farm to City and The Food Trust‘s websites. But of course, open year-round are the Rittenhouse (Saturdays 10AM-1PM), Fitler Square (9AM-2PM), Chestnut Hill (Saturdays 9:30AM-1:30PM), and Suburban Station (Thursdays 2:30PM-6:30PM) Farmers’ Markets.
