We’re going to assume that you’ve already got your 4th of July on lockdown — I mean, how hard is it, right? Vodka lemonade, Godlike BBQ, fireworks on somebody’s roof, and it’s done. Easy. But Bastille Day, like all things French and therefore superior to America (we love saying stuff like this just to drive old people WILD), takes a little more prep. Toward that end, let us direct you to two Bastille Day festivities we’re hearing about that sound great. The most notable is Le Bec Fin’s fete in the garden at the Colonial Dames Mansion at 17th & Latimer (pictured), that features live jazz quartet, traditional Bastille day rotisserie pig, passed hors d’oeuvres, desserts from our pastry kitchen, a Champagne toast, a specialty cocktail by one of Moet-Hennessy’s brands, and a chance to win 2 tickets to Paris, France — all for $50. Not bad. (Afterparty at Brasserie Perrier, doncha know. Call 215.567.1000 to inquire about tickets.) But there’s also London Grill’s annual Bastille Day to-do, held in the shadow of the nearby Eastern State Penitentiary’s notable annual Bastille Day blowout. London will feature “a special menu of festive French dishes created by Executive Chef Michael McNally, including French Sausages served on baguette, traditional French culinary mainstay Coq au Vin, and London Grill’s own home-made charcuterie plate. While the popular plate’s charcuterie choices rotate frequently, some recent options have included Guanciale, Lomo Curado, Wild Boar Pepperoni and Smoked Duck Pastrami.” And of course, French Cream Puffs will be available, because they always are. Ahem. Viva la revolution!

It was — what’s the word? — carnie-ish? Allow me to set the scene: A big room with a stage and two bars. Completely populated with Jeannie from Accounting, only multiplied roughly 200 times and given twice as many Sex On A Beach-es. Even the bartenders are morbidly obese. On the stage, a double piano (or maybe it was a single? this could have been an entire double-vision nightmare) with a man (or men) leading the crowd in a singalong of “Sweet Caroline.” It was, no lie, the closest representation I’ve ever seen in real life to the lyrics of “Desolation Row.” And guess what, Philadelphia? They’re coming to Philadelphia. NoLibs, to be specific. In the spot that was the (admittedly just as hellacious) Metro, at Front and Fairmount. This is what happens, my hipstergentrifying brethren, when you make God angry.
The event will be televised live on ESPN (not EPSN as stated on Philly.com) at noon this Friday, the 4th. Of all the Philadelphia contestants that competed in Camden, only one will be at Coney Island this year. “Humble” Bob Shoudt of Royersford gobbled 38 Nathan’s hot dogs to qualify.
Funny enough, this world ranked champion eater is a vegetarian outside of competitive eating. Even better, he boasts to be a better burger eater than hot dogs. This will be Shoudt’s third straight appearance at Coney Island, and he plans to just have some fun and enjoy the day. He is more concerned about training for the Krystal Square Off V, a burger contest in Tennessee this October.

In celebration of this discovery (and to get you thinking about some July 4th eats) we have compiled a list of places around Philadelphia you might want to check out for a great burger.

Copacabana, 344 South Street
The Copa Burger is worth traveling through the South Street circus to enjoy.

Eulogy Belgian Tavern, 136 Chestnut Street
The Beneluxx Napoleon Burger at Eulogy is 8 oz. of ground beef served on a challah bun, seasoned with secret spices, choice of cheese, a topping of your choosing and frietjes.
And if ground beef is not for you, indulge in their Flander’s Veggie Burger.

Five Guys, 1527 Chestnut Street
With reviews like “mind blowing fries” and “best burger in town” this place has created a sort of cult like following.

Goodburger, 1725 Chestnut Street
Goodburger is the new kid in town, and is quickly making lots of friends. Their signature burger is coked-to-order and the beef patties are ground fresh and cooked on a charcoal grill. Veggie and Portobello burgers are also available. Not to mention Ben & Jerry’s supplies the ice cream for the milkshake menu.

Standard Tap, 901 N. 2nd Street
This Northern Liberties eatery has made a name for itself as having on of the juiciest burgers in town.

Do you want a place to rant about all the crazy people who make your job difficult? Do you feel the need to get up in front of bunch of people and share your terrible tales? Of course you do! Sunday nights from 9pm to midnight Triumph Brewery hosts Server Rant Nights. The worst (or best) horror story wins a twenty dollar gift card and there are $3 beers for everyone. [MenuPages]
· Señor Jose Garces is the new tenant of the old 707. The eatery in the making is going to be a Peruvian/Chinese fusion joint named Chifa. Let me be the first to ask, what exactly is Peruvian/Chinese fusion? Restaurant classifications are starting to resemble to bizarre names we shout out when ordering Starbucks. Anyways, the opening is being estimated for early 2009. [blogalicious]
· A Full Plate Café will be expanding with a pizza place to be called Home Slice. Full Plate, co-owned by Liz Peterson and Shannon Dougherty, were not looking to expand, but when the space that used to be Pizza U Empire opened up the opportunity could just not be passed up. The menu is still in the works, but details about vegetarian friendly options, vegan cheese, and organic ingredients have been released. The philosophy of Full Plate is being carried over. Nothing fancy - just good food, fresh ingredients. Good Food. An opening has not been set. [CityPaper]

In any case, to our knowledge, this is the first sighting of Lorenzo’s big mug (and bigger slice) on an athletic shoe, but we pray to Sneaker God it’s not the last. Here are three beyond simple solutions to keep you cool and let you party at the same time.

The Beer Popsicle
So you might be a bit old for the ice cream truck, but you are never too old to enjoy a popsicle. Here’s how it works. Buy some popsicle molds. Let your favorite brew sit out for 24 hours. Pour beer into the molds and let it freeze. If you are trying to cut costs, use medium plastic cups and wooden popsicle sticks instead of a pre-made mold. Pour the beer in the plastic cups until it is a half an inch from the top. Let freeze until the beer slightly solidifies. Stick in the wooden stick and then continue to let freeze.
Some people get crazy and add flavors to their beer pops. Make sure to experiment with the right flavors before freezing your brew.

Berry Ice Cubes
Sure, sipping some juice or wine when it’s hot can be refreshing, but adding some extra flavor while keeping your drink cold makes it better. Pick up some berries. Blueberries and strawberries are the most commonly used for this, whichever berry you choose make sure you rinse them. Take an empty ice cube tray and put an individual berry in each cube space. Then fill the tray up with water and freeze. Now you have a kick-ass ice cube that will keep your drink cold that adds extra berry flavor to whatever you are sipping.

The Adult Smoothie
Smoothies are a great way to keep cool, but you know what makes a smoothie better? Vodka. Again, pick a berry of your choosing. Throw equal portions of berries and ice into a blender and mix until slushy. Next add 1/3 glass vodka, more then this could cause the smoothie to be more liquid-y then desirable. Then add a dash of freshly squeezed lemon juice and mix until smooth. Don’t have a blender? No worries, pick up a Slurpie and spike it, but make sure to stir it really well so that you are not sipping just vodka at the end.
